A collaboration between the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) and the UK Data Service (UKDS) , this webinar will be hosted by Oliver O’Brien, developer of our popular mapping interface CDRC Maps.

The webinar will unveil the process of creating “Top Metric” demographic maps, such as the Top Industry map seen on the CDRC Maps platform.

After discussing the key cartographic, geographic and technical considerations behind the maps, Oliver will walk through the process of creating such a map, from obtaining the data from the National Statistics agencies, using Microsoft Excel to pre-process the data and identify what needs to be shown, to using QGIS to map appropriately, accurately and fairly, and creating a final PDF map.

The webinar will also outline other datasets that are available through the CDRC Data platform, some of which have already undergone the “Top Metric” identification process.

The webinar will consist of a 40 minute presentation followed by up to 20 minutes for questions.

Level: Introductory/Moderate
Experience/knowledge required: Some familiarity with QGIS may be helpful but is not essential
Target audience: Researchers/anyone interested in mapping demographic datasets in the UK
