Example projects

Are property values an indicator of weight status in Yorkshire and the Humber?

Using open data on house prices, along with commercial data from a CDRC partner combined with data on weight status in Yorkshire and the Humber, we can investigate whether house price is a predictor of overweight and obesity prevalence. In Seattle in the US house price has been shown to be a string predictor of overweight and obesity. This project will explore data for Yorkshire to see if this is the case here.

Quantifying benefits of gym memberships in different population groups

Using gym membership data, including usage and demographic characteristics, from a national chain of gyms and the largest independent gym in the country, it will be possible to investigate the social and spatial variations in gym usage and also value for money of membership.  There will be opportunity to link this data with other data sources or to use the data in simulation models to calibrate synthetic populations.

Investigating whether the proximity of the workplace to retail outlets increases the likelihood of consuming convenience foods

Investigating whether the proximity of the workplace to retail outlets increases the likelihood of consuming convenience foods (ready meals and takeaways) And identifying whether this is associated with adverse health outcomes (BMI, Waist measurement, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and the Healthy Heart Score)

Above are examples of just some of the projects our interns undertake we have new projects coming up on a regular basis.  We welcome expressions of interest accompanied by a CV.   For further information on available projects and salary, please contact e.a.pound@leeds.ac.uk
