This workshop will introduce the basics in smartphone application development with a focus on applications that can be used for data collection purposes in research projects. It will provide some basic technical understanding of how smartphone applications operate and what technical infrastructure (e.g. storage and processing of collected data using either SQL-based or NoSQL-based database systems) is required for application development, debugging, testing, setup and usage. You will understand which technical systems might be more or less appropriate for the kind of application you might want to develop and use in your research. You will learn what the difference between hybrid vs. native mobile application development is and how this is relevant if you plan to develop and use an application for data collection purposes.

The workshop will also introduce various tools and frameworks that allow to create simple smartphone applications for data gathering purposes without or with only minimal prerequisite in programming, such as funf or the MIT App Inventor etc. and will show how these tools can be used by researchers to develop quickly simple data-collection apps.
