In honour of Love Data Week 23 we’ve reopened our free Introduction to Data Science workshop.
Published previously as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science, this is a three-part workshop where you can find out more about the CDRC, what our data scientists do on a day to day basis and why they love working with data.
We will also walk you through a data science project, where you will have the opportunity to work with real life data in our interactive coding environment and gain experience using the Python programming language.
Let’s get started with this video to give you an idea of what it’s like being a data scientist:
So now you know what a data scientist does, let’s walk you through the exercise we’re going to do today:
Ok, so now it’s your turn, open this online notebook in a separate tab then you can refer back to the guided tutorial as and when you need to.
Please note, as this is a remote document if you are inactive for more than ten minutes it may disconnect from the server. If this happens, please close the page and re-enter via the above link.

Programming languages can be hard to understand if you are seeing them for the first time. If you didn’t understand some of the code you’ve seen today don’t worry – learning these skills takes practice.
If you’re interested in learning more about data science, the work we do at CDRC or want to continue your data science journey and hone your skills we have a range of information and tutorials on our training and education page.
If you’ve enjoyed your first experience of coding – please be sure to tell your friends and we would love to see the outputs from your analysis on twitter – #CDRCSayData.
