This one day in-person course focusses on applied spatial analysis techniques and the production of high quality mapping outputs for participants who want to develop their GIS skills. We work with QGIS: a fee, open source Geographic Information System.
Mapping can be an incredibly effective way to show information, however it can be hard to know what approaches to use and how to get the most out of your data. Data visualisation and effective communication of analysis is vitally important. In this course we’ll focus on how to produce high quality mapping outputs that bring your data to life.
We will cover approaches to conducting vector-based spatial analysis in QGIS to gain insights from geographic data. Then, working through a number of examples, we will cover approaches to mapping and cartography. By the end of the session participants will be able to identify and apply spatial analysis techniques and be able to produce a number of high quality outputs. Short lectures will be interspersed with hands-on practical exercises throughout the day to give participants practical experience of using the software.
This course is designed for participants with familiarity with GIS software who want to their GIS skills to the next level.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of different spatial analysis techniques
- Identify appropriate approaches for mapping and visualising data
- Produce a range of high quality mapping outputs
Ryan Urquhart is a Teaching Fellow in Data Science at the Consumer Data Research Centre based at the University of Leeds. During his time at the University he has contributed to academic research with journal publications and has supported in the delivery of student education across undergraduate and postgraduate level courses. Prior to PhD studies he completed an MSc in Consumer Analytics and Marketing Strategy at the University Of Leeds Business School after studying BA Journalism at the University of Derby.
Is this course for me?
This course assumes familiarity with GIS software and functionality and is designed for participants who want to build upon their experience to take their GIS skills to the next level.
This training course will take place in LIDA, Level 11 of the Worsley building, University of Leeds. Directions will be provided ahead of the course and catering is provided for both days. The CDRC offers this course twice a year. Further details about our spring workshop for the course is to follow.
